Bioshock 2 originally released back in 2010. Three years after the release of Bioshock, it has brought players back into the world of Rapture, with plenty of new things to see and toys to play with. In 2016, 2K released a remastered collection. Showing off your new coat of paint, the question remains, is Bioshock 2 worth your while?

"Dream of Rapture is over"

Welcome back to Rapture. It's been a few years since the events of Bioshock, and the city hasn't performed well. Much of the city has fallen further into disrepair, with many areas flooded. Similar to the city's general deterioration, the surviving townspeople also didn't do much better. Their insatiable appetite for Adam, the DNA-rewriting agent, along with the aging population of the Little Sisters, necessitated the kidnapping of children from the surface to fulfill their role. In the absence of Andrew Ryan, a new despot has taken his place. Sophia Lamb now rules over what's left of Rapture, her plans for the City, its people, and Eleanor are the cause of your resurrection.

"Even the ocean can't hurt you in this suit"

You are playing as Subject Delta, Big Daddy alpha series. Resurrected ten years after his death, he must find his younger sister, Eleanor Lamb, before the couple they share kills him. Like Big Daddy, Delta has access to powerful weapons and abilities to help him survive the crumbling city. With his diving suit, he can take quite a beating, as well as cross the ocean floor, moving between locations or surviving a sudden hull breach. Given his size, Delta can wield a wide range of heavy weapons only available to big daddies. This, combined with his ability to use plasmids simultaneously, makes him a force to be reckoned with. The Delta's sound design really makes it feel like it's a walking tank. His steps and his landings are thunderclaps that reverberate on the walls of delight, reflecting the giant the player controls.
Playing as Big Daddy in Bioshock 2 is a huge leap from Bioshock 1. Whereas in the first game you were given a wrench as your starting weapon, here you have access to a powerful combat arm. Overall, each weapon is more versatile and powerful than the one from the first game of a comparable roll. The main improvement is the ability to dual-wield both weapons and plasmids. This greatly facilitates their use in combat and allows the player to quickly combine their attacks. Another is the fact that Eva and health packs are fed directly to Delta through tubes. This eliminates the injection animation from the past game, allowing for smoother combat battles.
Thanks to improvements to the player's abilities and weaponry, the enemies have also received an upgrade. The old Bioshock enemy list returns with a few new additions. For example, Big Sister is a new type of boss enemy. As strong as Big Daddy, but with high mobility and many powerful Plasmid abilities. Overall, the enemy lineup remains pretty good and fun to fight.

"If the world were reborn in your image and likeness, would it be heaven or perdition?"

A minor annoyance I found was the change in interaction with the younger sisters. Previously, you killed their protector and could either save or collect the little sister for her Adam. However, in Bioshock 2 you can accompany the rescued little sisters to get more Adam. This is a vital resource, especially for the higher difficulties that exacerbate the problem with it. The problem is that the player must participate in several defense sections while the little sister collects Adam from certain corpses. This will significantly reduce the player's supply of ammo and items, and may become obsolete as the game progresses. Another n*ggle is, unlike in Bioshock 1, the inability to go back to previous areas, so if you miss something, you must either start a new game or load a previous save.

Solution

A definite improvement on the Bioshock formula with a few issues. Bioshock 2 is a good game with a nice story and once again great world building. If you liked Bioshock 1, then you should return to Rapture.
Bioshock 2 is an overall improvement to the first game's formula, delivering a fresh Rapture experience, with more new abilities and weapons for returning players.
