BattleBit Remastered Review (LTJ)
BattleBit Remastered was a hit game in 2023. I will never forget this game's hype upon release and how it climbed the Steam charts in every possible metric. Everyone spoke so highly about it, and rightfully so. It feels like playing old-school Battlefield and Call of Duty with a Minecraft aesthetic. The weapons felt great, the camo and gun skins you could unlock were fun, and BattleBit Remastered looked like it could be the next big thing.
For months, the three guys who developed this game (SgtOkiDoki, Vilaskis, TheLiquidHorse) did a lot to capitalize on its massive success. Patches, bug fixes, listening to the community, and it was heading in the right direction. I eventually fell into the hype a few months after release, and during last year’s Steam Winter Sale, I bought it and the Supporter Pack DLC. I played it and instantly fell in love.
I’ve been playing FPS games pretty much my entire life. I grew up with DOOM, Wolfenstein, Quake, and countless other classic 90s shooters, and BattleBit Remastered took what works with fun gunplay and made a great online competitive multiplayer game. Seriously, it had endless replayability and was just so much fun.
In late December 2023, I noticed this game regressed after a massive update. Then, the developers completely abandoned it. This is after they broke something with the audio portion of this update, and everything sounds muffled. Explosion sounds are out of place, and eventually, cheaters have taken this game by storm. It’s painfully evident that the game is broken and completely unplayable. Broken audio, broken sound effects, and an onslaught of cheaters have ruined this game.
This game was viral, but now, you can’t find more than 100 people barely playing at any given time. That’s how far this game has fallen off the gaming map. Nobody talks about it. Nobody streams it. BattleBit Remastered is dead.
At the time of this review, there have been ZERO updates since December 2023. The developers ran with the money they earned, and who knows what will happen to this game's future? It’s been almost six months since that update, and they haven’t given any updates on new content, maps, quality of life updates, fixing the major sound issues, or even a basic roadmap for 2024.
It’s a shame. This game could have been tremendous. This would have been a massive gaming success if they had continued to support and flesh out BattleBit Remastered and develop crossplay and cross-platform play. Can you imagine how much fun it would have been to enable crossplay/cross-platform with PC and console players and let everyone run wild in 254-player modes?
It is what it is. I enjoyed my few hours in this but saw all the red flags that it was a dead game. I’m not wasting my time, effort, or money on a game that has gone almost half an entire year without any updates, communication, or anything. It’s filled to the brim with blatant cheaters and will eventually be nothing more than a fun memory. I will always wonder what it could have been with proper support and development.
I give BattleBit Remastered a 2/5 since it gave me a few hours of fun, but this game is done. Unless, by some miracle, these three developers come back hard in 2024 to fix all the issues, add a ton of new content, and bring this game back to life, I’d recommend playing something else. I do not recommend this game, and unless they prove me wrong, I will never support these three developers again due to completely abandoning this game at the height of its success with zero communication about it. I get it. Things happen. The least they could have done is communicate candidly with their community instead of leaving us all in the dark.
