Awesomenauts Review (Doomball)
If I were to go back in time to 2012 to when this game was released, where it stood out with it's infectious and unique presentation and it’s gleaming potential, I'd do it in a heartbeat. As it is today, almost 11 years after release, It's just about become one of the worst experiences I've ever endured, period.
The game is filled to the brim with childish and toxic individuals that will berate, insult, blame and shame you for not playing to their standards. Many of the same individuals will cease to contribute to your team and report if they feel like you are playing on a level bellow themselves. This also makes learning new characters absolutely anxiety inducing because you know for sure that if you play even a little rough, or don't buy the upgrades deemed 'required' to play the character effectively, you know your team will call you out on it and ultimately blame you for losing the game.
I've even had someone say I should commit suicide because they thought I played Gnaw poorly, even though, considering I was learning the character at the time, I thought I was doing pretty well. That should tell you the level of lethargy that infests this dying community and will ultimately be it's downfall. Moments like this happened constantly and I hope this serves as a major warning to anyone considering picking up this game.
As for the gameplay itself, the simplified 2D platformer MOBA might've been a unique take on a very competitive genre back in 2012, but has since become a mindbogglingly irritating series of insane area denial and burst options that will more than likely 1 shot you for even thinking for a second that you could approach 2 inches forward.
This game is so mechanically bare yet there's far too much to learn and understand for new players to reach a point where they can comfortably join a match without the risk of getting lambasted thoroughly by what must be childish men or literal children.
I would have left this game long ago, but sadly my compulsion to get every achievement in every game I play kept me from leaving sooner. If you're an Achievement Hunter, as one myself, I will tell you right now to look elsewhere. While most of the achievements can be done in private custom games with bots, the prestige achievements will be the hell that keeps you from freeing yourself from this mechanically bare bones game and awful community.
I was fortunate enough to already have prestige 5 before the free to play update changed it to where you had to level up characters individually. Levelling up just 5 characters took me 170 hours, a third of which was queuing in the matchmaking system. I was lucky as hell to have a second monitor to pass the time but this is far too long to be spending time on prestige achievements, let alone a game this mechanically empty.
I look upon this game in contempt, I hope to never ever play a game with a community like this and it's a stark reminder as to why I hate multiplayer games.
Do not get this game.
