Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration Review (geengi)

Several thoughts about this collection. Its a linear storyline thru the history of the various games and timelines. its very well done. Lots of history and nostalgia. Usually these remakes the controls are awful and unplayable. In this case you can use keyboard or x box 360 controller. Both at best suck. at worst unplayable. Atari Football (Which i actually own the machine), Is completely unplayable on this as its a 2 player game and theres no way for both players to choose plays and lock them in. IMPOSSIBLE TO RUN A PLAY. CANNOT BE PLAYED. REALLY? Try playing Breakout or Avalance with keyboard or a xbox controller. IMPOSSIBLE. Missle Comnmand or Centepede with a x box controller? lol good luck. They mention Atari pinball but no playable games. Shame. They could have made those playable as you know there are many pinball emulators out there. Next up is the library overall is pretty small. for this price they could have added a ton more games.
Notable omissions are Berzerk, (NOW INCLUDED IN THE DLC) Space Invaders, ET (The game that killed the industry, but the guy who made the game is featured in several video presentations in here but only touches that he made the game, nothing more). Defender (good luck playing that with a keyboard tho). Also absent are any Activision titles. (Bad blood still exists mabye)? For the 5200 and 7800 to leave out Robotron is a sin. Finally, they did mention the Tele-games sears games, but none are included. Lastly, they mention a lot of third party games but none are included. Surprised they didnt include the 3 games by Mystique (Those were the first porn games). Mabye thell add more games in the future but for $39 there's definitely NOT enough games. But knowing Atari, thell prob come out with a DLC when they add more games lol. I was gifted the first release and the subsqquent DLC with is basically withheld content to money grab you later as a DLC.
Of course you can simply download the entire library of any console via emulator and play that way. MY ADVICE: Simply download Stella for the Atari 2600 and Mame for the coin op stuff. I ave a tankstick with a trackball platform set up its so much easier. I bought a real arcade spinner and a usb attachment as well. This is far better then these unplayable controls.
On a more positive note they did do the boxes and inserts really well. Great video graphical presentation.
Overall its a well presented package paying homage to the brand. I still own my 2600 Heavy sixer i got in 5 th grade along with mabye 70 carts, all in boxes and the system box too. Surprised they didnt show the super cool 2600 package box. I also own the 7800 and 12 carts, although that system didnt have that many games to begin with. Also notably absent is the one pinball machine that was actually a hit for them. Superman. All the other pins were bad. (I own several of the machines). I also own a good bunch of the arcades featured in his package. its not the same playing on a pc and a keyboard then it is actually owning the mahcines but it works. Besides good luck finding a Superman Pinball or a Space race machine or an original Pong machine.
If its on sale for $14 pick it up. For $39 leave it alone.
The 2 DLC should have been part of the original release. The whole package is worth mabye $20 if you like the interviews and the storylines. The games are not really that playable with the keyboard/mouse or x box controllers.
