Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy Review (Semmy B)

I played the original trilogy for the Ace Attorney series back during my senior year of college during the pandemic. With an excess of time, I sorted through the highest rated games on steam and made the plunge into the series.

The original trilogy had many positive traits going for it. The cast of characters were memorable & the plot lines that played out had many of us on the edge of our seats. It was a fantastic set of games that left a deep impression on the way I think about how information is presented in stories. A truly timeless series.

Now, if you think that this is a review that will admonish the Apollo Justice trilogy in favor of the Phoenix wright trilogy, you'd be wrong.

The original games, due to the time & budget constraints, recycled assets & characters in order to stretch their budget. However, the strength of writing is undeniable.

The Apollo Justice trilogy finds itself in a different position entirely. For various reasons, each game in the AJ trilogy had a different director involved. Each game in the AJ trilogy feels distinctly different. The fact that this series is even called the Apollo Justice Trilogy is a hell of a red herring when the focus is split on three different defense attorneys in the series.

This lead to some confusion when you enter the name game & find that there's very little connecting everything except for the characters who even then tend to change.

If you are willing to overlook what is undeniably a growing pain for the series, what you'll find is trilogy packed with a lot of charm, fresh ideas, and a stream of new characters to fall in love with. While not perfect, I do appreciate the amount of effort & the willingness to make mistakes to take the series forward. I'm unbelievably excited to see what the future of this series holds.

TL:DR Keep Cooking, 9/10
