Another Farm Roguelike Review (TheVampire100)

Another Farm Roguelike is exactly what it title says. Funnily enough I know only one other farming roguelike and that is Atomicrops, so maybe that is the game this one mentions.
This is a very relaxed roguelike experience with no enemies and a gameplay similiar to Stardew Valley. You rent a little island and your job is to get enough money from it to pay the rent for several weeks. The higher the difficulty you play, the more weeks you have to play and since each week the cost of the rent gets increased daramatically that means you have to invest deep into your farm.
The gameplay is very simple to understand, you start on your island with many natural resources like trees, rocks and bushes, even some ponds but nothing else. Yu can remove those with your tools to get some resources that you can either sell for quick money or use them to build some buildings like a furnace or bee house.
You can also plow the field and sow some seeds but you have to buy some seeds in the shop first. As in real life, a week lasts seven days and at the beginning of the last day you always have to pay the current amount of your rent. If you fail to do that, you lose the island and with it the game. Each week (except the first one) starts with a random modifier that lasts the entire week and changes the gameplay in some way of it, several days can also have modifiers, some positive, some negative. Some affect you only a little bit but some may drastically change the way you have to play that day.
A few examples would be that natural resources drop 1 more resource when destroyed or that your furnaces don't work that day.
At the second day of each week you can also select one of three random upgrades that are active for the rest of the game. These can be something that gives you a onetime boost like instant money or a random fully upgraded tool but they may also have a lasting effect that help you to play for a specific strategy. YOu could for example get a boost for specific crop types, either by having them grow faster, give you more resources or more money. If you don't like a selection, you can simply reroll them, first for free, later for money.
The game has a variety of crops which can be purchased as seeds from the shop and then be grown. Each crop takes a different amount of time to fully grow and produces a different amount of crops to harvest. Your crops can be sold directly or refined further by using them in various crafting recipes. This increases their price but in some cases you can also receive buffs if you use them yourself.
The shop selection is random each day and you can invest moneyx into the shop to unlock different types of wares like ores, animals and flowers among other things. There is also a black market which sells expansive upgrades which can help you to improve your strategy.
Besides farming you can also fish with your rod, there is luckily no fishing game. You can also craft various items using your resources, usually food that can be sold but also jewelry from metal and gems, potions from your alchemy lab and various buildings that are meant to help you. As is typical in this type of games, you have limited stamina. Every time you use a tool, you loose some stamina. Upgrading your tools reduces the stamina costs but also increases the area of effect for that tool. Once you run out of stamina you cannot use any tools anymore for that day but you can still do all the other stuff that does not require stamina like selling items, collecting items from furnaces or bee houses and so on. If your run out of things to do you can simply start the next day.
Tere are several additional features in the game to give the player more variety. First, there are different characters to play as, each one has a starting bonus. While every character can do everything in this game, the starting bonus helps you to start with a specific strategy in mind. Several upgrades synergize greatyl with the starting abilities of those characters. Additionally you also have each week three quests from the characters of this game. Those are simple fetch quests, bring them specific items and get another item in return. This can help you to get items you have not access to yet or simply swap a cheap item for a more expensive one. You can do this quests at any time during your run except the final day of the week and there is no penality involved if you don't do them.
In the end it all comes down to make as much money as possible in the fastest way you can pull off and everything you do is all for this goal. One thing that this game makes clear is that you have to invest money first to get more money back later. Either by buying seeds, unlocking more stuff in the shop, expanding your inventory or even getting some upgrades, it all is very expensive at the beginning but if you don't do this, than you won't have the capabilities to make big profits later on. Since your stamina is very limited you have to decide how to spend your money and resources wisely so that you can get bigger benefits from it. Getting sprinklers is costly at the beginning because it takes away metal that you could use to upgrade your tools but it also removes the need to water plants yourself which would save stamina in the long run, so you can do more things per day. Building furnaces costs a lot of stamina and stone but furnaces don't ned any stamina to maintain and you can get the resources for it very easily which makes them agreat surce of money if you have a large quantity of them.
All these decisions help you to get closer to your goal. In the end, what the player does to get enough money is up to him and because of the random nature of the game you might adjust your strategy multiple times depending on what you get during the run.
For the cheap price I think the game offers a great amount of fun and like I said it is very relaxing. The game even has a free mode without the rent, so you can just build and farm as much as you like.
