Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs Review (distantlight)
A pretty dull take on the successful horror formula established with Amnesia: The Dark Descent.
The biggest problem with AMFP is it all feels very linear and non-threatening. It's like going on one of those rides at the fair, in which you sit in a little cart that travels along a track through a dark tunnel, while spooky images pop up. Sure, it can be mildly disturbing at times, but you never really feel like you're in any danger, and you certainly have no control over what happens anyway. If you get too close to something scary, there's probably an invisible wall there to make sure you don't injure yourself.
And if you do somehow (in one of the game's rare encounters with an actual antagonist) manage to get yourself "killed," you'll just respawn nearby anyway. It never really feels like there are any consequences to your actions.
The story is mildly intriguing, and the game's visuals do provide some great atmosphere. But it's trying so hard to be vague and confusing, it's just irritating instead of horrifying.
