Age of Wonders 4: Dragon Dawn Review (Aluminum Elite Master)
For $10, sure.
But some caveats:
#1 - The content is a little light, even for $10. Lizardfolk are a cosmetic, so, that didn't matter at all to me. I can finally make my Argonian faction from Skyrim I guess, but otherwise that's not content I care about. Further, Ashen War is just one map... that, too, is not a big deal to me. So, what remains after those two things are some good additions, but 2 out of 5 selling points already don't matter a lot to me.
#2 - It's two tomes, not two series of tomes. Which creates awkwardness, because it's 2 single tomes that don't fit into any existing series. They are both dual Life/Chaos affinity tomes, and they have some OP abilities in them (the 18 hp heal + strength is super OP for how low that mana cost is and how early it appears). But it's very strange that it's just two tomes, with a level 1 and a level 3 tome... sort of odd.
#3 - It's not a huge issue since the new Dragon Ruler leader type has enough to it, but be aware that the Dragon Ruler cannot use a lot of the gear already in the base game... their loadout is its own unique system for the most part, which works well, but does mean items and even the wonder rewards are going to have to go to other heroes, not your leader. Minor, but worth noting.
Overall, though, it's an okay DLC. The Dragon Ruler is the main draw, and it's well done for what it is. It's got a bit more unique take on the faction leaders, and it brings some new events in as well. The two tomes also add a hybrid model, as they are dual affinity, which is another unique twist (though I wish there were three more similar tomes, to make an actual tome series, instead of being sort-of shoe-horned in).
So, for $10, I'd say it's reasonable. It's not massively game-changing, and because I don't care about cosmetics or the new map, it's slightly less than what I had hoped for, but at just $10 and for giving a new ruler type and a few mechanics changes/additions from the two new tomes, it's decent.
