Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition - Knights of the Mediterranean Review (leoleez)

This DLC has a few different aspects to content.
- 1 new game mode, Tycoon which is a economic race focused game mode. I will update this when I actually play it.
- 8 new multiplayer scenario maps that add objects of interest and start conditions that change up the core Supremacy gameplay.
- 30 new maps, I believe this is free, you don't need the DLC to benefit from this.
- Diplomacy within games, to allow for some multiplayer madness
The two civilization are interesting, both of them having a focus on Infantry and have unit bonuses that seem defensive and situational.
The Italians have booming-centric gameplay where they gain a lot of their Settlers through research. They have a building called a Lombard which essentially converts a resource 1:2 (so food to wood and coin). This seems a little bonkers, but with only access to a single Factory, I'd say it's more of a interesting trade. Italians have a slight defensive bonus with units that absorb damage from their neighbors. They have access to mercenaries and a lot of unique units through the Basilica (church on steroids). Overall I see this being a combination of Portuguese style booming with the crazy mercenary exotic armies of OG Germans.
The Maltese are a bit funky, they play a lot like the civilization in the story campaign part 1. They have a two fold focus on infantry and buildings. They can turtle hard. They have access to a whopping 5 forts, and have a building that essentially is a mini fort that also can teleport units. If you want to tarpit and build fortresses, this is the civilization for you. Their unit options are also more unique, and they have access to permanent unlock unit types with mercenary cards. The three stand out units are the unique infantry, the Hospitaller is a speedy melee infantry that can melt things if they get close, they get a speed bonus to being near buildings which help them close the gap. The Sentinel is a very powerful Musketeer, they fire faster while closer to buildings, so they can be very defensively powerful. Sentinels can be upgraded to be able to build buildings as well, making them a really good choice for the tarpit. The last unit is the Hoop Thrower, which can melt other infantry and buildings. The hospitaller can get a volley shot to help with their melee, where as the Sentinel and Hoop thrower can be upgraded with a rocket attack, this is the Grenadier rocket on steroids. They hit in an AoE like a British rocket, but with the rate of fire of a Grenadier.
Overall I'd get this if you're itching for a new game mode and new styles of skirmish maps, the civilizations are fun to play around with, but seem more situational than the very flexible Africans and much more predictable than the US and the Mexicans. They have a flavor of the OG game release, but with the design and game mechanics of the later civilizations.
