Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition - The Mountain Royals Review (Hat8)
The Mountain Royals expansion for Age of Empires 2: Definitive Addition has gotten alot of hate for not having enough content for its price, but the hate is simply undeserved. This expansion has 3 campaigns, but they are *really* good campaigns with some interesting new civilisations.
The Armenian campaign is pretty enjoyable with a focus on choosing between allies with different playstyles. One can either be supported economically or militarily depending on the ally chosen. This one also has interesting mechanics like breaking free from a tributary relationship and being on the defending side of a siege. The Armenians are an interesting tanky civilisation with battle monks with +100% healing, infantry with more HP, Churches that can be garrisoned and mule carts that can be used to gather resources easier.
The Persian campaign is pretty simple and standard with its mechanics, but its about an era and religion (Shia Islam) never really given any attention and features a Persia that has been reworked to better represent its history as one of the "Gunpowder Empires". Its pretty enjoyable to play with a civilisation with cheap archers, excellent late-game heavy cavalry and gunpowder castles that destroy siege equipment.
The Georgian campaign is excellent. Its a cavalry spam campaign with a focus on liberating territories for economic allies. It lets one focus on being constantly aggressive and using units efficiently with good micro. The campaign also features a set piece battle with a preparation stage, and scenarios with optional pacifistic paths. The Georgians are a pretty simple civilisation. They have the mule carts and garrisoned churches (that boost villager gathering) that can be used to keep their economy safe. However, their main appeal is that one just has to spam cavalry with with and try to build lots of castles that are buffed by higher elevation and arrows that go through multiple units.
This is a good expansion and on sale it is about the price of a donair platter.
