Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition - Dynasties of India Review (CaporalDxl)
Very fun expansion that has been requested by the players for a very long time, as India is way too big to count it as a single civilization, especially in the middle ages. The Indian expansion has been split into 4 different civs, one of which is playable in the base game as a replacement for the Indians, and the other three available through this expansion pack. All of the new civilizations have several unique things about them, and I find them all to be a lot of fun, particularly the Bengalis. Also, all 4 Indian civs have access to the Battle Elephant now, and three of them have access to the Elephant Archer as a regional unit (instead of a unique unit like it was previously).
The Bengalis are so much fun. They have really good Elephants, and their unique unit, the Ratha, is unconventional, powerful, and a great support unit for the elephants (though this does mean your army is quite slow). Their Imperial Age unique technology makes villagers take a little less population space, which means you can be ahead of every player in the game in terms of pure population space, which is really cool. Their ships regenerate HP and are just generally very solid.
The Dravidians are a very interesting civilization that focuses on infantry (with a great unique unit) and navy (with a really cool unique unit here too!). Their castle unique unit is the Urumi Swordsman, who has a charged attack (deceivingly similar to the Coustillier), which does a ton of damage to the target and splash damage too (it's way too powerful). This kind of makes up for the extremely lackluster stables and just generally empty as all hell tech tree. The Thirisadai unique unit is a huge ship that is really powerful against all manner of other ships (particularly Galleons), but it's also very expensive. Their Imperial Age unique tech, Wootz Steel, is really powerful, as infantry and cavalry (aka light cav and non-elite battle elephants) ignore armour, which is quite controversial in the community. All in all, a fun civ with some really unique things going for it.
Gurjaras are a fan-favourite civ, from what I've seen, and I find them quite fun too, though not as much as the previous two civs. Their castle unique unit is the Chakram Thrower, who is very powerful against massed troops, as they act like scorpions in that they damage units in a line. They also have access to the Shrivamsha Rider, who has anti-ranged armour (similar to protoss shields in Starcraft), signifying them dodging projectiles, and are the replacement for the knight line. They're otherwise quite squishy and very vulnerable against melee units, but against archers they absolutely destroy. They also have access to Camel Scouts in the Feudal Age, which upgrade automatically to Camel Rider in the Castle Age. A ton of unique units and a pretty decent tech tree make this civ very interesting to play.
The Hindustanis are the replacement for the previously generic Indian civilization. They have strong camels and hand cannoneers, and their unique unit (replacing the Elephant Archer) is the Ghulam, an anti-archer infantry unit that can deal pass-through damage (basically a melee mini-scorpion). They're a fun civ and I find them much more fun now than they were previously. They also now have access to the Caravanserai, a unique building that speeds up trade carts in a radius around it.
I have finished two of the three new campaigns and they were very engaging, with some very unique objectives in a surprisingly large number of scenarios. All in all, definitely a worthwhile expansion pack.
On a more negative note however, the update that was released with the expansion pack has caused me some bugs and other issues. I crashed once in the middle of a campaign (and I have a pretty strong PC), and have had some performance issues. Units seem to be quite unresponsive at times, one of my land units literally got stuck in water somehow in one of the campaign scenarios, and there are all sorts of other bugs littered throughout the game. I reckon those will get solved soon though, and the expansion pack is still tons of fun.
