After the Fall Review (Scaredy Dad)
I have purchased 5 copies of this game. Three for myself (2 steam, one Meta/Oculus) and two for friends on steam. I'll likely get another copy for PSVR for myself as well so I can have a whole team of people playing at my house alone. If that doesn't show approval of a game, I don't know what else would. Like many, I was strung along for literal years waiting for this, and it was worth the wait.
This game allows for some intense gameplay. Nothing like the helpless feeling of a giant zombie boss lifting you up by your neck about the kill you with his other fist and you are scrambling to reload and shoot him in the face.
I hope they do more as the story aspect is a little weak at this point. The game is more of a vibe and a setting than a story....
Don't get me wrong... the setup is great, but that is pretty much what you get.
The Setup and good gameplay (hopefully with a group of friends) are incredible strengths of this game and while I'm hoping that they do flesh things out I am finding myself coming back as much as possible As the game stands already.
Still I'd like them to Insert more story, including more elements of discovery and perhaps even give you insight how things ended up this way and setting up some sort of nefarious opposition responsible for the menace. As it stands zombies seem a sort of life threatening infestation and you are the clean up crew, but you don't seem the affect any real improvement on things.
As it is, like Arizona Sunshine the sense of hopelessness that you get about enacting any real change at one point might eventually draw you away from the game, so hopefully they do add more accomplishments and plot. Right now the draw is to get better and more powerful weapons, which is only going to be so compelling. I'm hoping they may take a seasonal approach and do some of those things along the way, although if they stick to their methodology in Arizona Sunshine, they likely wont add much more at this point. I hope I'm wrong.
Things I'd like to see improved in the game:
X body deformations of players are quite comical and take you out of the experience.
X some things are just too "sticky" and it's hard to not accidentally grab them or have them get in the way and it can be distracting.
x When you reload the shotgun, it puts a phantom shell in that you have to eject before shooting. If this were real life you'd have just wasted one shot.
x I'd like them to find a smart way to allow verbal communication in the line again.. It's my understanding that it was initially there but removed. It's annoying that it's Mime land. They should have it set up for proximity and allow others voices to be muted and/or simple made invisible in your vr space. I'd also like to see them expand the subway with more nooks and crannies to go along with that. I'd also like to have them double the size of the range area and move things so that the weapon mod area wasn't right in the middle of your shooting path. The multitool and mount get in the way of shooting and reloading practice as is and are an annoyance. The zapper from the arcade to the right is also sticky and gets in the way too here.
X The centralized game servers are currently working dismally. Its the peak of frustration to be repeatedly booted from runs. Worse to reach an advanced point with friends and then be booted and or have one if them get booted and get stuck with AI BOTS replacing your good friends because of server instability. Unfortunately as of late this seems to happen during every session for myself and my friends.
X I’d like to see them setup the game to allow a local server at some point because as it stands the game is entirely dependent on the studios servers to run. I would really like a way to play offline or with friends independently of the studios (currently shoddy) servers.
This has become one of my current favorite games to play and I'm looking forward to more from this studio.
