Across the Obelisk: Amelia, the Queen Review (Syn)
Edit: Updates after a hundred hours of play.
This review contains no spoilers, and there is a TL;DR at the end.
Overall: 9/10
This DLC contains a single character, complete with skins, card backs, new unique gameplay, and unique world map interactions. It was priced at 4.99 USD when I purchased it.
I am saddened to say that this is the strongest DLC release that this game has seen. The character is fun, unique, and lore-important. They bring with them a slew of new builds to play and test, as well as a collection of new lore discoveries. Their concept allows for varied gameplay, with concepts that are simple enough for a new player to understand and build around, as well as nuance in the deckbuilding complexity for the hardcore gamer. They bring with them a unique resource that is fun to build combos around. Their character art is great looking and in-theme with the game.
I have played through the game with the character only once at the time of this review. Already, the character is reaching my hour-per-dollar minimum value. I already see multiple additional builds I would like to test with her as well, meaning that I will certainly get my money out of this dlc. The cost is certainly casual friendly, and I believe this character would be worth it's price at 7 or 8 dollars even.
I only have 1 minor gripe and 1 concern for the dlc. My gripe has to do with the Frost Swords level 3 trait, which indicates it provides access to a card. It does not give a picture of that card like other levels do. My 1 concern has to do with the frequency of unique dialogue interactions within the game. This character is the queen. They also are a unique character (that I won't get into for spoiler reasons). I only ran into a few dialogue options on my path. *Update*: The amount of lines is pretty miss. There are some neat and interesting ones, but I feel like there's a depth of character missing. This is the queen after all, they should have more to say.
*Update*: I have one further complaint regarding Amelia. I like a lot of the core that is here, but I think a few mage cards for support would be nice. IE i've not had a lot of luck in a deck that gets 12 spell swords, and the list of exactly 2-cost spells available that work with her abilities seems lack luster. This is less of a character design issue and more a request for additional card support for her.
Some are complaining that this dlc released with an update that added a dedicated launcher for the game. The DLC itself does not add the launcher. If you are the type to cry because one extra screen opens when playing games, then I guess don't buy the original game. Otherwise, get over yourself, press play, and move on. The launcher closes itself and is not intrusive. It has 1 small ad. The design is light and sleek. Stop freaking out.
Overall, I recommend this dlc for all players. To the Dev Team; Thank you for taking into considerations the concerns of players in the past.
TL;DR Character is fun, unique, easy to learn, nuanced, and has good artwork. Their builds are new and interesting. They are well planned and have unique world dialogue options. There is little to no concern or gripe, aside from the character not having enough world interactions for how important they are lore-wise. Easily worth the price of the DLC.
