Today marks the 80th anniversary of the Normandy Landings (June 6, 1944), more commonly known as D-Day. D-Day was a daring invasion plan by the Allied forces as part of a greater plan known as Operation Overlord. Over 150,000 soldiers primarily from the Canada, the United Kingdom, and United States stormed five key beachheads - Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword. The landings were supported by both naval artillery and strategic deployment of paratroopers behind German lines. The paratroopers were tasked with securing key points such as crossroads and bridges. Deployment of these paratroopers wasn't smooth as many became scattered across Western Europe which created pockets of resistance behind German lines. Nonetheless, the mission was still carried out.
D-Day marked a large turning point in the war as the Allies secured major footholds along the French coast which helped accelerate the liberation of Western Europe. We have added a free pack to the base game showcasing a few memorials and monuments of the past to honor this event.
