The Battle of the Bulge, a pivotal engagement during World War II, unfolded from December 16, 1944, to January 25, 1945. Adolf Hitler aimed to disrupt the Allied supply lines by capturing the Belgian port of Antwerp and splitting their forces. The Germans launched a surprise attack in the densely wooded Ardennes region, catching the Allies off guard. Initially making significant advances, German forces created a salient into Belgium that press referred to as the bulge.
The Ardennes offensive, however, faced numerous challenges, including unexpected and harsh winter weather that hampered both sides. As the weather cleared, the Allies regrouped and staunchly defended key positions. In addition it allowed the US air support to strike German positions and supplies. General George S. Patton's Third Army played a crucial role in relieving the besieged town of Bastogne, which had become a focal point of the battle.
The Battle of the Bulge resulted in significant casualties on both sides, and the Germans could not mount a major offensive for the remainder of the war.
