This game is pretty damn awesome. For an '06 RTS it has a nice UI and a surprising amount of QOL features. The ground combat reminds me of Dawn of War except in EAW you can actually zoom out enough to see all your units. A small change but it actually makes the game handle so much better.
The Galactic Conquest mode is a nice combination of traditional RTS and 4X mechanics, involving enough layers to keep me interested without being at all overwhelming. The same goes for the actual combat.
The vanilla game is great on its own, full of all the iconic star wars ships, characters, and locations you would want. But mods make this game transcendent. All three major overhaul mods (covering the Republic, Imperial, and Post-Imperial eras respectively) add some more strategic layers and a countless new units for weirdos like me. I cannot believe they do it for free.
The only reason you should not get this game is if you had strategy games or hate Star Wars. If that's the case, I'm so sorry. You are truly missing out.
