Having played Skul since its early access days, it's a relief to see it grow and improve throughout these years. With two hundred hours on this account and more than 1000 in an older one, the biggest feeling Skul gave me was: "Damn, this is fun". The story isn't exactly original or nuanced, and it's not the focus of the game; the joy comes in trying out all the different skulls and items and finding synergies between them. The sheer amount of possibilities these combos offer and the incomparable satisfaction when you succeed with one are worth the hours put into the game (replayability). If you're into 2D side scrollers rogue-lites with a lot to learn and try out, then Skul will be well worth your time.
Pros:
- Stylish animations; beautiful 2D pixel art
- Replayability; all the random items and skulls you get on each run makes every venture feel fresh
- Combat is fast-paced and responsive; satisfying gameplay
- Unique skulls and abilities are fun to use
Cons:
- Story is underdeveloped
- While every skull can shine with the right skillsets, some of the skulls and skills are ridiculously broken and strong
- For perhaps the first few hundred tries, the levels feel fresh; after that, the level designs can get quite repetitive as there are only so many
- The normal game mode can be challenging for beginners (with all the controls and mechanics and items information to learn) while being way too easy for veterans (The dark mirror mode is a good challenge though); it doesn't do a good job of explaining the game to beginners, which is especially frustrating
Overall, it's a decent game. if it's your cup of tea, then don't hesitate. It's a good contender for filling away time as well.
