Separate Ways is an example on how to do great DLC. It expands on the main story of RE4, giving us a new point of view on how the events of the game carried on, and of course, insight on one of the most mysterious characters in the Resident Evil franchise.
If you're on the fence about getting this, I'd recommend it if you want more RE4, of course, but also a new perspective on the main game's story. Seeing everything happen from someone else's eyes is actually pretty fun and it gives us insight into quite a lot of characters, not just Ada.
Separate Ways tells the story of how Ada Wong, a side character in the main game who we already know since RE2, carried on her actions during the events of RE4. Originally telling Leon she was FBI, she then gets outed as a mercenary doing a job for an unknown employer, and by the end of the game her fate is left unknown as she falls falls into a pretty deep pit at the Raccoon City Umbrella facility.
We then meet her again halfway through RE4's campaign as she keeps a low profile, showing up whenever necessary and eventually helping us out during the final fight against Saddler.
After we find out who her current employer really was at the end of the game, Separate Ways puts us in her 6-inch heels to see what exactly was going on behind the scenes as Leon was out there saving Ashley.
I'll not go into details about what exactly happens, but I'll mention some important bits.
This DLC not only answers questions about some events in the main game, but also adds a lot of depth to some characters, Ada is one of them, of course, but also Luis, and someone who wasn't even present during the main game, Albert Wesker.
I think the best part about Separate Ways is how we get to witness the campaign's story through a new perspective. We already knew Ada was doing something during the events of the main game, but this DLC shows us what that something was. Not just that, but it tells us a bit more about a character I deeply love, Luis. In the DLC, we get to know more about his journey trying to help Leon and make amends for his past actions as an Umbrella scientist. We also see how Ada played a part in that personal redemption of his, which adds even more to the question of "where is Ada going with this?"
We also get to see how Ada helped Leon throughout his mission, in ways we didn't even realize the first time around. I really love this detail, not just because it shows how Ada actually cares about Leon and isn't just using him, but it's just kind of awesome to find out something in the game didn't happen out of pure chance and things are a lot more connected than they might seem.
Since the final cutscene of the main campaign also teases her growing a conscience and going against her employer's wishes, it's really interesting to see how she gets to that point, how she decides to do as Leon asked, and finally change.
The thing I really love most about this DLC is how it really expands upon the main game, giving us a new perspective and answering some questions, which is something I personally think RE2's alternate campaign, where we play as Claire, completely failed to do. This time we really get to see how things played out through someone else's eyes, filling in the gaps of RE4's story and giving us more insight on a lot of characters.
Level design in Separate Ways is also pretty good, most of the times we're going through places we already did in the main campaign but under different circumstances, so how we go through that area or what enemies we might find just changes completely. We also go through those areas in a completely new order, which makes things pretty fun, forces us to think on our feet. Finally, the new bosses added with the DLC are pretty good, there are only three, but I'd say they've done a pretty good job with them, with one of them being actually challenging in its final encounter, moreso than many bosses in the main game.
Also the new music they got for the DLC is really good, the best tracks only show up when saving or loading a new chapter but I can't deny they were well made. Clear to see how a lot of care got put into them, it makes the whole thing feel authentic and original.
Separate Ways is a great expansion, and it really should be the standard for DLCs, no matter what game we're talking about. IMO, it did great as a story expansion and added some really neat stuff when it comes to gameplay. Also, it's just more RE4, which I welcome with open arms.
