TL;DR: Buy it on sale. All game systems feel decent but needed a bit of extra polish and balance to take it to the next level. Gets boring and frustrating after about 20 hrs.
The good:
- Some of the weapons feel amazing to play with your mid-run upgrades changing the way you play your build
- There are quite a few different systems in the game that give you "variety" during your runs (we'll get to this 'variety' in the cons)
- Difficulty feels fine but if you've played a lot of these games you'll be able to clear it no problem
- The story has some witty and funny lines and kept me engaged without taking itself too seriously.
Cons:
- Repetitive boss system that requires you to beat the SAME BOSSES 8-9 times before you can get the final boss
- Build variety is actually just an illusion with the best builds being crit-focused, ruling out 4 of the 6 weapons. This could just be a skill issue on my part, but all the best upgrades are crit-related.
- Morgana offers you a "positive" and "negative" buff, kind of like a double-edge sword type of system, except there are only 2 or 3 good upgrades that are actually worth it and every other upgrade is actually just a downgrade because of the negative buff
- The desert map (2nd stage) is an unbalanced piece of garbage with traps that pull you in instantly if you don't have a dodge-roll. There is one bugged laser beam enemy that will sometimes homing-quick-scope cross-map you even if you try to dodge out of the way. The visual clarity of this tileset is absolute eye cancer. One of your weapons shoot a yellowy-orange projectile. But enemy projectiles are also yellow, so you just get into this mess of yellow projectiles on a dessert tileset. Absolute abhorrent game design.
- Still on the second map, the 2nd boss feels like garbage to play against. He has a few attacks that are almost instant and un-telegraphed, and since you have to be in melee range to do any damage in this game you get insta-gibbed for a chunk of your HP.
I had fun for the first 20hrs of the game and I really wanted to fight the final boss to get my 100% achievement, but I gave up on my 7th clear of the game because I got bored of the same RNG BS runs over and over again with the only challenge being me trying to get the upgrades I needed to curb-stomp the run, or failing to do so and not having the damage to clear rooms. The last unlocked weapon and ability felt f*cking amazing to use and it's a shame that it took so long to unlock it because I almost quit before that.
