TLDR: This game is really pretty and has one of the best training systems ever. Buy it.
I came back to fighting games with SFIV and played through all variants, then UMVC3 which is my true love. I did not enjoy SFV at all and MVCi is looking like a shambles. Despite my disinterest in Dragonball, the upcoming DBZ Fighters looks visually brilliant, and I thought I'd give a different ACW game a shot in the meantime.
The feel of Xrd took a bit of getting used to for me. It's strangely "floaty" feeling, especially at first. There are chain combos as "gatling" combos, links (with some characters more than others) and all the usual command throws, projectiles, supers etc. Roman cancels are sorta the equivalent of fadc/xfactor for people familiar with the other series I mentioned. Dead angle attacks are like v-reversals in sfv, blitz shield is sorta like focus attacks. As well as regular supers, characters have a ridiculous anime 1-hit kill move that is useful under specific circumstances.
This game does take a bit of time to understand, it's fairly complex and I feel like I've barely scratched the surface - the characters are all so different that learning a new one is almost like learning a new game. However I will say Xrd has the best training I've ever seen in a game, hands down. The training mode itself is fairly extensive, but it also offers missions (which teach you about the game engine and some fighting game theory in general) and combos (which teaches you individual character's moves, basic and advanced combos)
Xrd has an arcade mode with a bit of character interaction, and a bunch of collectible stuff (characters models etc) if you're into that too. The soundtrack is pretty generic metal. I'm not a particularly big fan of the aesthetics of the character design in general, but the game itself looks fantastic with the 3d as 2d presentation. I wish all 2d fighting games looked like this. The online seems mostly decent to me, mostly playing against one other person in the UK (approx 200 miles away)
