Dead Space: A Terrifying Return

The Dead Space Remake makes the game more scary and terrifying thanks to the upgrades in its visuals, Necromorphs are frightening in general and there are moments in the game when they can get a jump on you and spook you even if you go with the mindset of expecting them from any vent.
That being said, looks aren't the only thing the remake changes, there are now more areas with fire, explosions, electrical currents, and all sorts of environmental hazards. The game also features more areas with gravity zero, details, Issac can now speak as a character rather than being mute (which is wonderful), and even a secret ending for beating the game in new game+. All of this makes this Remake the best way to revive the fear in Dead Space.


The Ishimura: A Ship of Horrors and Hardships

Moving onto the main attraction, the Ishimura is a huge location that harbors some of the most dangerous abominations, necromorphs. These come in a lot of different varieties and can be tough to fight, and that's because Dead Space is a hard game. Fighting the same enemy in gravity zero results in a different approach to combat, and some foes can be so deadly that they can dispatch you in seconds. The choice of what part to dismember changes how you think in each fight, such as targeting the arms to avoid damage or reducing the mobility of enemies by targeting their legs, to add to that one must also conserve ammo, for there are bosses and hoarders to eliminate.

The game has optional zones where one can find extra ammo, upgrades, and other goodies, however, each of these zones has the risk of having foes in them. It creates an interesting and enjoyable approach to exploring the ship, as one must ponder whenever deviating from the main path to get some much-needed resources worth the jumpscare and extra necromorphs. The level design will at times force backtracking back into the horror of previously visited areas now with new guesses and moving through the ship is also as dangerous due to fans and rolling objects.
The Hunter: The Scariest Thing Since Your Childhood Closet

In addition to normal enemies, Dead Space has bosses such as the Leviathan, and the Hivemind, but none are as scary as the Hunter. This massive unit of a monster will start chasing the player through certain areas of the Ishimura, adding tension and keeping you on edge and the best part is: you cannot kill it! That's right, with the Hunter stalking the player and appearing at the worst of times, it reinforces the fear factor of the game and the challenge as he can be accompanied by normal foes.

And that is a good detail of Dead Space, that each boss fight is interesting and different, from fighting stalking monsters to creatures the size of a ship and more, each of those encounters is a marvel of a fight. Knowing how to best use your weapons and tackle each boss is essential to survive.

Noises That Cause Fear

Finally, I cannot leave out the sound design in Dead Space, which is as eerie as the visuals of the game. Every creak, roar, and music spikes has been meticulously crafted to scare you and send chills down your spine. The noises don't stop at the monsters, as the machinery also makes ghostly hums and the silence of space at times can be even worse.

The voice actors do a good job, with Isacc being a good protagonist even if he is not Mr Charisma. The human and necromorph screams can be unsettling at times as you explore the ships, and each member of the cast delivers when it comes to believable characters.

Price Point Analysis and Replayability

For 60 bucks this is a must-buy for survival horror fans, is the definitive way to play Dead Space and its origins! The game lasted me around 10 hours, and I heard from folks that the average is 13 hours, that is without going through the new game+ to experience the new ending and complete Isacc's upgrades and arsenal. While a bit on the short side, each segment is a blast, and the only downside could be that perhaps Chapters 6 and 7 were a bit too long.

Conclusion

The Dead Space Remake hits all the right notes of what a remake should be: the definitive way of experiencing a game. Adding new content, redesigning some, and improving upon the foundation, this Remake creates a terrifying adventure that is not for the faint of heart and that is as brutal as scary. Face off the fears of space and say hi to the Hunter for me!
