It's safe to say this game won all my heart and mind, I instantly fell in love with it. The game feels like a timeless classic yet criminally underrated work of art. Horror fan or not, I think everyone should play this one. It's a perfect introduction into survival horror genre itself. I honestly can't stop thinking about this adventure the game presents to you.
It's games like this that are the reason why I fell in love with this genre. I honestly can't wait for the physical release so I can buy the game twice, it deserves every support it can get!
Crow Country pays homage to classic survival horror titles like many other games alike on the market currently, but this one manages to stand out more than the rest and bring its own unique experience. There are some clear inspirations taken from PS1 era graphics, but no other game looks, plays or feels like this one in particular. It's not trying to be like Resident Evil or Silent Hill it is its own unique experience, it's Crow Country. For a horror game it ironically gives me a unique feel of nostalgia and warmth, like I'm revisiting parts of my childhood I never actually experienced. It's incredibly unique low poly blocky art style mixed with its stellar soundtrack sets the tone and atmosphere perfectly, making it feel surreal or very dream-like. Even though I was never fond of theme parks Its rich beautifully designed environments make this theme park seem like one breathing entity. It also has one of the cutest mascots I've ever seen, I adore that crow fella in the heart of the park.
The progression and gameplay aspects are simple but incredibly satisfying. Traversing through different areas of the map and exploring them peaks more curiosity to see what piece of clue or story next area might present to you. The weapons are not only very useful as self defense but they're your very powerful tools too. It isn't afraid to hold your hand a bit too much sometimes, because finding resources is a tad bit too easy, but that's honestly great. Not every horror game needs to be punishing and grounding, its a breath of fresh air having to put up a fair fight against enemies and I'm glad it encourages that especially considering gunplay is very fun and satisfying, enemies can easily overrun you if you're not careful enough. Not to mention, randomized enemy encounters and designs are beyond impressive.
It explains itself well without being too convoluted and delivers one of the most top tier storytelling I've seen in a while
Plot clues were placed around in so many clever ways where other certain details distract you from revealing the biggest secrets.
Puzzles were simple yet very fun to do.
It has an amazing cast of characters whom are all charming in their own unique ways. Main character Mara Forest is written exceptionally well. She's all around badass but a huge dork who is extremely likeable and easy to feel connected to through the journey. The moment when she placed all her items at the end of the journey and recollected how they helped her felt so heartwarming too and exactly how I felt even before that scene played out. The devs KNEW what they were doing with this, massive credits should be given for their flawless writting. The jokes she cracks are always chuckle worthy and are very fitting which is why the game doesn't take itself too seriously sometimes despite its tone. Humor is very well thought of and placed well, it fits the overall style of the game. It sometimes feels very heartwarming even though for the most part it isn't. It's a beautiful but dark game all in one which is all you really need. (It's also yet another game that makes me wish women were real)
When I saw the credits roll I genuinely felt sad that it was over and craved for more.
I can't wait to check out all the fun new content you unlock at the end providing more replay value so the journey doesn't end yet luckily
I could gush out about this game forever but in the end I just want to say thank you to the devs for creating this charming masterpiece. It's clear the devs understand the genre and us, survival horror fans well. It is because of games like this that opened my eyes on the joy of my new favorite genre.
I hope there will be a sequel or a game similar to this because this art style and gameplay hasn't been seen anywhere else and I seriously crave for more. Even though I know the plot has been concluded, I really want to see more of "Crow Country".
