I want to change my review to be a little more specific about the game, and not just screaming like an angry chicken. And I'm tring not to be too long (I failed).
First thing first:
I preorder this shit on day-1 and I even bought the latest DLCs. I was around when Guastatori was OP, rifle men blob was THE cancer and the pathfinding was so atrocious that you avoided to make veicle (now it's a bit better), and I REALLY would love to make a positive review.
But I can't.
It will be a lie.
I tried the Dinamic-Campaign at the beginning, and it was boring as hell. Didn't go past the prologue. It was a nice idea, and I was curious about it yes, but playing against THIS AI is just stupid. I know they fixed it, but I didn't buy this game for the campaign on the first place.
The North African campaign is more like a classic RTS experience, but this time it was just bad. Tecnically and stategically. I played it because I wanted to se the "reward" that the games gives to me, but trust me: DON'T PLAY IT.
It's only a big waste of time, the most boring thing I ever play in my career.
So lets talk about the multiplayer, the main reason I bought this game.
And you'll be surprized to see how easy is for me to summerize it.
This game feels like a toxic relationship. You know it's bad, you realize very soon, but sometimes one every three or four matches you finally have fun and you keep playing.
You try new things, new strategies.
You try to be better.
You even watch top players on youtube/twitch for inspirations.
But you fail.
Or at least I fail, because I don't like to blob, to spam cheap units and A-move them in to the map, to make 5-6 mgs and block everything my opponent has, to turtle on the VP and just wait for artillery.
The problem is not you, that want to play like a normal human being and not like a brain-dead monkey.
The problem is that the game has just several things that are simply too cost effective and there is very little counter to them.
There are no strategy here.
If you try to make a "balanced army" you'll probably loose at 5 mins in to the game.
Sure, some times you meet a real player that want to do the same, and this is were you can have fun, but beleave me if I says that this is a rare occasion.
End of the story, multiplayer in this game is for monkey, not for people.
I would like to talk a little about the community now.
Other than the usually toxic people that are present everywere, people here can be divided in to who says "Axis OP" and who says "Allied OP". You can see that in to the discussions page.
Someone even says that this game is in a good state right here, and I'm happy for them, but the reality is not in the extreme, but in the middle. And if I have to say something about I say that Allies are way more easy and less punishing that the Axis.
NOT OP, hear me out you Allies fem-boys enjoyers, N-O-T O-P.
Just easier.
Let me explain why I think like that:
I'm an Axis player, a DAK player to be more specific, and I play 1v1 most of the time because my friends dropped this game after their 3th hours.
And they still bully me becouse I spent so much time on this garbage bin.
Playing DAK is fun. You have to care about sinergies with veicles and I like their units more than other factions, but playing DAK feels like you start the game and you are already loosing it.
Your units cost more than your opponent, so you have less men on the field and you get easily run over, and they are very situational. You have to upgrade them if you want to compete, and upgrading is expensive. And you already have less manpower available than your opponent, because your infantry is (guess what?) expensive, not just to build but to mantain too. So you have to be carefull.
You can argue that if they cost more, they are more effective. And this has sense.
But not in this game.
Go play a 1v1 between a Dingo and a vanilla 250 half truck, a Canadian unit against a Panzergranatier unit, a supper against a panzer pioneer.
They cost the same, but if you are the DAK here you'll loose so bad that you'll ALT-F4 out of the game.
Sure, DAK can be good, yes. They have good units, yes. But when you drop them the Ally monkey has already a counter for them or ... just more units, easily replaceable and more cost-effective. So it's pretty easy for them to kill your bike or your Flack.
And if you loose a unit as DAK, you'll loose the game.
So, what do you do?
You switch to another faction, because I refuse to spam bersaglieri or panzer pioneer with granade louncher.
"WeLL, mAyBe You aRe jUsT bad, if YoU sWiTcH tO ALliEs yoU'll sEe tHaT tHeY aRe NoT tHe pRoBleM aNd YoU'll lOoSe WiTh tHeM tOo"
Good argument, my sweet baby boomer. That was exactly what I did.
And man... I was soo right that I felt dirty.
Playing USF or Brits alike, after playing so much with DAK and WM, is like going to a park an fight against 5-7 years old kids.
Sure, if 10 of them surround you with stiks you might get hurt, but it's a rare occasion.
Allied units are so good and all-around that if you loose it's becouse you fucked up multiple time or your opponent is very competent. VERY competent.
Really, I've never struggle with Allies.
I even leave the game open to go to the bathroom and came back, still able to win.
It was boring at some point, and I didn't played the meta, or spam units. I just played like I used to.
"BuT tHe stAtiStiCs sAyS DAK hAs thE mOsT vIcTorY RaTe..."
The statistic also say that the DAK is the least played faction.
I wonder why...
And this situation is more of the same as it was three years ago, with some differences.
Because yes, the DEVs managed to fix a lot of problems that the game had at the beginning, and not only on the balance side.
I have to give credit to them.
But man... we are far from having a good RTS here...
The DLCs only worsen the problem. They feels like pay-to-win. New battlegroups are so overpowered they should have been nerfed BEFORE release, not after 2-3 patches, that comes after 2-3 months.
It seems like the DEVs didn't even tested them!
Are they fun? Yes.
Do they blend in to the game? Absolutely not.
Despite all this, and that's because I'm a masochistic asshole who loves to get hurt, I keep playing ... sometimes. Or maybe not, because every match is the same, and I have better things to do.
I'll change my opinion when things will be different, but I'm loosing my trust on the DEVs. They don't seems to have a clear vision on the game. And if they have, and this is the result... I have a bad feeling about this.
