TheoTown Review (Rushmore)
TheoTown is an impressive game. I used to play it a lot on mobile, now I finally afforded it for PC. Hands-down one of the best purchases I've ever made on Steam. For those interested, have a look at both pros and cons of this game I've found during my 2-year-experience with TheoTown:
Pros:
Retro-looking pixel graphics make a game look like an old-school 1990s city builder sim. Noice...
A huge amount of materials to play with: terraforming, hundreds of buildings, roads, zones, disasters, and much more.
Outstanding plugins support - There are hundreds (if not thousands) of plugins to choose from, which will enhance your city in so many ways.
Easy, responsive controls and UI. Each button and in-game object has an explanation attached to it => a perfect game for newbies in city sim.
It's simple, straightforward, fun, and addictive. It's not as complicated as Cities:Skylines, nor is it so hardware-demanding. It's a game you can learn in 15 minutes, however it requires months of deliberate work to become a pro in it. Simple to learn - hard to master.
TheoTown is a literal sandbox paradise. You can choose from 4 game modes: Sandbox, Easy, Medium, Hard. Each mode gives you numerous opportunities to have fun with. You can build a beautiful city, a small one, a big one. Make a lore to it, destroy it, nuke it, flood it, anything imaginable! You have the power of a God - so use it as you like!
It's not overwhelming. Some games are 3D with tons of detail, others are way too hard to understand. TheoTown offers a simple and peaceful experience. 2D graphics look very cute and the game is not hard to understand.
A potato PC can run it.
Depending on the game mode, TheoTown is a very relaxing game. Just spectate pedestrians and cars move around your city, listen to the peaceful music in the background, birds singing, cars roaming. Perfection...
Online mode offers even more opportunities to play. Multiplayer mode is basically a one big region where everyone can join and build a beautiful city - together.
The community is friendly. I'm active in Reddit community of TheoTown, and as far as I have seen the members there are very friendly, supportive and willing to help.
Endless possibilities and replayability. TheoTown offers its users a possibility to create small, medium, big and gigantic regions. You can merge them all in one or split them in squares. Furthermore, if you get your hands dirty in the console, you will be able to create EVEN bigger regions. Not to mention the in-game world generator which offers you unique seeds. Each seed opens endless possibilities for building and thus - awesome replayability.
In my personal case, TheoTown indeed helped me with urban planning and city understanding. What looks like a fun pointless game, actually is an awesome learning material - you can learn how different city zones cooperate with each other, how taxes and loans work, how to efficiently place municipal services, how to construct an efficient road system, how to prevent crimes/ fire/ diseases, what affects residents' happiness, how to control and manage supplies (water, electricity) and many other stuff.
Cons:
Not for action-lovers. I hate to disappoint you, but if you await any kind of action, drama, plot or campaign in this game, you'll never see it in TheoTown. It's just a peaceful city-building simulator.
Strains eyes. While an ultimately subjective experience, I still need to say that the amount of detail this game has strains my eyes. After playing it for over two hours, it becomes progressively harder to concentrate on the game.
Lack of tutorials, materials, videos. Due to "un"popularity of TheoTown (compared to Cities:Skylines), it's noticeably harder to find resources (such as tutorials, livestreams, videos, trends) on the web.
Some may find the game's graphics too simple or too blocky. The game is made of 100% pixels. No circles, no lines, no triangles - just pure S.Q.U.A.R.E.S. For some users it may be too weird or too simple (yk, AAA gamers are way too picky). But once again, it's just a personal preference.
Conclusion and Verdict:
TheoTown is an impressive game. It offers you tons of possibilities and endless opportunities. It's a literal paradise for simple, old-school, sandbox game lovers like myself. It is fun, simple, and interesting. TheoTown easily competes with sim-giants like Cities:Skylines. If you asked me for a rating, I'd say this game deserves a solid 9/10 rating.
In my verdict, you should definitely buy this game, regardless whether it's on sale or not. The game is most definitely worth the money. Thank you for reading this lengthy review!
