Littlewood Review (Barolb)

I think there is a lot to like about this game, and a number of things to really not like about it. This review has some spoilers, so if you aren't prepared for it, then don't go over the marked spoilers.
To start off with the likes, this is the first game I have played where it was possible to play with a single hand. And as many jokes as there are on the Internet about that, this game's controls are on the left side of the keyboard, and are fully accessible with a single hand. This takes down quite the barrier for entry for those with mobility/accessibility issues. You don't need two hands to play this game.
The second thing I like about this game is that there is so much content to go through that it becomes a conundrum to figure out what to do next, or what to do for the day. It's really packed full of stuff, and a lot of the time you can just explore and eventually figure out how to do stuff. You don't need external guides, for the most part. You can use them for reference when you're at your twits end, but it is entirely possible to go through the game without using any reference guide. It is intuitive enough, and that is quite the accomplishment.
My third point: It's addictive, and relaxing. If you want a break or just some relaxing gameplay, I think this is a great game for it. Especially if you like other pixel games like Stardew Valley or Graveyard Keeper. The vibe is similar.
Now the bad, and why I don't recommend this game. The beginning to the midpoint (15-25 hours) of the game is really fun and content-driven, but beyond that it gets tedious, very grindy, and less rewarding. This is painfully apparent when working through the second half of the game and towards achievements where prodigy level achievements comes with a multi-in-game day grind for certain activities. It's very disconnected from the rest of the game and even progressing in it. XP isn't taken into account when working through it. You can reach the max XP level for activities well before reaching some of the in-game achievement thresholds. Unlike early on in the game, this is not at all neatly packaged. And that is both an annoyance and a disappointment.
The story is also an afterthought. There are many events the player sees as they level up their town folk, and some of them are fun and witty, others can get a bit more story-centric with some odd possible foreshadowing... But by the time I reached the final area of the game there seemed to be nothing to close the story out. And that just leaves me confused. No dialogue changes... Nothing. That is very disappointing because of earlier character interactions and dialogues with characters like Dark. I was expecting some kind of last minute dialogue thing that put an end to the darkness and solemn or something to indicate that getting to that final area of the game had some significance.
And lastly, some activities come to a standstill after you get marriage. There isn't enough post-game content to keep you interested or to keep the cycle of activities going. By that time, you are probably well stocked on practically any and everything. The gameplay is repetitive, but by this time it feels like there is little or no reward for continuous progression.
In terms of bugs and glitches, there aren't that many I had encountered. But here are some common 'strange' occurrences.

Frequently my game would go unresponsive, but by leaving it for a few seconds it will load fine and be playable again. Not that big of a deal. Just something to keep in mind and not try to immediately quit the game without saving.
Some achievements won't activate unless I restart my game.
I encountered a very frequent bug where at the end of the day after coming back to my house, i would get stuck in the doorway unless I walked an extra block forward. Unable to walk left or right. My house has absolutely nothing in it to obstruct me, so this is definitely a bug.

The good news is that if there is ever a time you get stuck in the game, such as in your farming area, going into the building mode and repositioning the camera will allow you to get unstuck. And while this might sound like a mild nuisance, I really like this mini function! Even if there is a problem, it doesn't totally inhibit the gameplay experience.

So, why buy Littlewood? I think if you want a relaxing, but addictive game that is accessible then this is definitely something to look at. If you like town building games, then this is an interesting game to look into. If you enjoy pixel games, then this is a game to look into. Despite its flaws, by the time you reach the midpoint of the game you will likely had gotten your money's worth in time spent on it if you go by a per-hour metric... But if you are expecting something beyond the early game chaos, then you might get bored of it after a while. Unless you are really fond of the mechanics, there is little reason to come back to Littlewood after that initial 15-25 hours spent in the game.
