Remember during the Mid and Early 2000s, when gaming wasn’t afraid to experiment? An era which gave us the monstrously fun Godzilla: Save the Earth and War of the Monsters? Well, after a long spell of endless mobile slop and pachinko machines, we now have a new GOOD Kaiju game.
Although there were some good Kaiju games like Into the Breach released amidst and endless sea of trash, the Kaiju genre is best played as a brawler. Unlike the massive disappointment that is Sunstone Games’ unrealized Kaiju Combat or the seemingly MIA Daikaiju Daikessen, Passion Republic Games lives up to its name by releasing the passionately made and genuinely fun GIGABASH.
GIGABASH’s gameplay is a lot like its predecessors Godzilla Save the Earth and War of the Monsters. You have a selection of 10 base game Kaiju (or 8 Kaiju, one Mecha, and one Kaijin if you want to be specific), pick an arena, and then you bash them like a child would with their dinosaur toys. Like War of the Monsters, you get stage hazards and pickups to throw around, and like Godzilla Save the Earth...you get the Godzilla cast (sold separately!). The controls are incredibly simple, but each different Kaiju has specific setups and passives that make each one unique, so you’ll have to devise different strategies per monster in order to effectively bash the other Kaiju’s brain in. There’s a story mode, which gives us a closer look into the origin of each monster, although DLC Kaiju are lacking one sadly. There’s also a variety of randomized minigames in Mayhem Mode and a PVE COOP mode in Onslaught, the latter of which definitely needs an online version. The graphics are appropriately cartoony, the music is neat, and the sound design is pretty good so far. Godzilla and the Toho gang get their trademark roars, Ultraman and the other Giants of Light retain their iconic sounds, and the original GIGABASH monsters all sound unique. ROJAK in particular is not only incredibly fun, but has the most entertaining sounds and music in the game. I highly recommend getting him.
If you’re craving an actually GOOD Kaiju game experience, get GIGABASH. It comes with 10 monsters in the base game but gets even better with the DLCs.
Oh and yes, they DID add Godzilla’s goofy celebration jump and dropkick in.
Hell yeah, now go buy this game and become a Superbeast.
